 This weekends OC Park Hikes and Bikes features the “Edible and Useful Plant Hike at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. This Hike is lead by Karin Klein, Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalist and author of Explorer’s Guide 50 Hikes in Orange County- Explorer’s 50 Hikes (Affilate Link).

This special hike shows hikers the useful plants that can be found locally that are both edibile and serve as valuable medicines, making it my “Pick of the Week”.

Edible and Useful Plant Hike at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park
Early pioneers found their uses for local and introduced plants, and now science is finding out about potentially valuable medicines in our wild backyard. Learn about these edible and useful plants during a moderate, but steep, uneven 2-mile hike (400-ft. elevation gain) with Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalist, Karin Klein (author of 50 Hikes in Orange County)

Guided Interpretive Hike at Irvine Regional Park
Join our naturalists on a nature walk and learn about the local plants, animals and history of Irvine Regional Park. Light to moderate walking on both paved paths and trails. Meet at the Nature Center near the OC Zoo in parking lot #19.

Just Beyond the Spring Equinox – Laguna Coast Wilderness Park
Enjoy the canyon views, look for wildflowers and find out what “makes the spring” on this interpretive, moderate, 3.5-mile hike over steep and uneven terrain (600-ft. elevation gain) with Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteers and OC Parks staff.

Ranger Led Nature Hike at Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park
Join our Park Rangers Sunday mornings for an easy 1-mile hike on the Nature Trail. The trail takes visitors through grassland, oak woodland, riparian and sandy cactus scrub communities. Meet at Old Corral Day Use area. Rain will cancel hike. 

  • Fee: Free
  • Parking: $5 per vehicle
  • Wear comfortable clothing, hiking shoes.
  • Sunscreen, water and insect repellent are recommended.

Birding Walk at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park

Spot native and winter resident birds with Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalists on this 2-mile hike over uneven terrain (up to 400-ft. elevation gain) through one of the most diverse plant communities in the United States.

  • For ages 12 and up (minors must be accompanied by an adult). Wear hiking or walking shoes and bring your binoculars.
  • Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, James Dilley Preserve (405 South to 133 south to stoplight at 73 turn-off; make a U-turn, go 1 block; Dilley is on the right).
