Owl See You Saturday!

Sorry, I couldn’t help the pun. OC Parks has some fun FREE events for the family this weekend that involve Owls in the day time and a night time hike with hot chocolate!!!

On Saturday morning, November 11th from 10:00 am – 11:30 am, learn about local owls using their five senses. Join Park Ranger Jen at Mason Regional Park as you discover how Owl’s use their sight, smell, sound, touch and taste discover their unique features for survival.  There will also be a hands-on owl pellet dissection. (Young children will be asked to partner with an adult for activity.)

Mason Regional Park is located at 18712 University Dr, Irvine, CA 92612.

The event and parking are FREE. Turn right at the stop sign after the park entrance and park in Parking Lot A. Meet at Shelter #1.

On Saturday evening from 5:30pm – 8:00pm, The annual fall/winter night hikes return with the “Hoot N’ Howling Night Hike” at Carbon Canyon Regional Park. Visit the Nature Center, get toasty with some hot chocolate and cookies, then follow the Park Rangers as they lead you through a night time hike to the Redwood Grove. Be sure to bring your cold weather gear and a flashlight as you see the natural wonders of the park that can only be seen at night. Afterwards enjoy a live animal presentation by the “Nature of Wildworks”. 

Carbon Canyon Regional Park is located at 4442 Carbon Canyon Rd, Brea, CA 92823.

Friday Nights at Bowers

Looking a wonderful way to spend you Friday evenings this Summer? Spend Every Friday night enjoying access to art galleries & live music at Bowers Museum for just $5.00!!!

  • From July 7th  through 28th you can experience the “Frank Lloyd Wright: Architecture of the Interior” exhibit.
  • From August 4 through September 1st witness the “Stark Beauty: Photography” exhibit by Edward Weston.

These events take place every Friday Nights from 5:00pm – 9:00pm, bring your appetite and get some of the amazing food that is available for purchase by Tangata Restaurant, drink specials and a cash bar.

Live music will be provided by musician such as: Joel Aceves, classical guitarist and April Walsh with jazz standards from the 40’s and 50’s.

You can purchase tickets at the door or online.  If your a member, the Friday Night program is is free!

All About Snakes

OC Parks

Hiking season is in the air! One of the ways to prepare the kids for upcoming hikes is to make them aware that snakes live in the parks and trails we hike in.

O.C. Parks invites you to join local herpetologist Steve Bledsoe at O’Neill Regional Park to learn all about snakes that can be found in Orange County.

This family-friendly event will feature a live reptile display with local snake species.

Come learn how to identify snakes, where they live and what to do when you encounter one on park trails.

There will also be an informative presentation on rattlesnakes of Orange County.

Here’s some great FREE family fun this weekend! Come down and enjoy Tanaka Farms End of Summer Festival.

Today, Saturday, 9/3 and tomorrow, Sunday, 9/4 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm., enjoy samples of sweet watermelons, grilled farm veggies, start a seedling at the planting station, free ATV rides for younger guests, and other fun activities for kids.

The Tanaka Farms Food Shack will be grilling up some juicy baby back ribs, corn, and hot dogs in addition to their La Taqueria menu – carne asada and carnitas tacos, nachos, and tamales. Don’t forget Strawberry Lemonade and Strawberries and Ice Cream…YUM!

Melon Tours and U-Pick Tours will be running at the follow times:

  • Melon Tour times this weekend are: 9;30, 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 1:30, and 2:30 and the price is $18 per person (2 and under free). No reservations needed – arrive 15 minutes before tour time.
  • U-Pick Tour times are: 10:00, 11:00, and 12:00. This is a free wagon ride – just pay for what you pick. No reservations needed – arrive 15 minutes before tour time.

Also – get a sneak peek into the acres of pumpkins that are growing for the upcoming Pumpkin Patch! Please note that Tanaka Farms will be CLOSED on Monday, Sept. 5th for the holiday, so get out there today or tomorrow and enjoy the farm!

Hummingbird Walk

ENC-hiking_trailLooking for something special and fun for the entire family this Valentines Weekend? Join ENC Naturalist Leslie Helliwell for a walk in the ENC (Environmental Nature Center) to search for hummingbirds and their nests.

Hummingbirds, called  “flying jewels” by the early Spanish explorers hover in space, power dive and fly backwards and sideways!  Learn where these tiny bits of non-stop energy get their fuel, discover how they “broadcast” their color, and learn which plants depend on them for pollination.

  • When: Saturday, February 13, 2016, there are two walks for yout to choose from: the first walk is scheduled from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm, a second walk is scheduled from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
