Spring Garden Workshop

The Great Park will host  a Spring Garden Workshop on Seed Starting, Saturday, February 7, 2015 from 10:00 am – 11:00 am

Sowing seeds is exciting, gratifying and less expensive than buying starts. Plants started indoors flower sooner, extending your growing season.

Learn how to successfully grow plants from a seed with the UCCE Master Gardeners. All Participants will take home a 6 pack of their own and have a chance to win a seed starting kit! Master Composters will be available to answer questions as well.

Long Distance Hike in the Back Country
OC Parks – Laguna Coast Wilderness Park
Explore the beauty and diversity of Willow Canyon,Bommer Ridge, and Emerald Canyon in the      backcountry of the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. This will be a strenuous, 7.2-mile hike (650-ft. elevation gain) over rocky, steep, and uneven terrain. We will hike through sycamore and oak woodlands, coastal sage scrub, and along ridges with beautiful vistas.

  •  Participants should be fit and able to hike long distances.
  • For you safety and comfort bring 2-3 liters of water, a hat, a hearty snack and proper hiking shoes.
  • Ages 15 and up.
  • Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, Willow Canyon Staging Area (west side of Laguna Canyon Rd/SR-133, just south of El Toro Road).

Moulton Peak Geology Hike
OC Parks – Aliso & Wood Canyons Park
Join LCF volunteer naturalists on this 4-mile geology hike (600-ft. elevation gain) over steep and uneven terrain. Hike through the oak-filled woodland of Wood Canyon and continue to the park’s highest peak. We will pass by rock formations that tell of ancient floods, landslides and the building of a great shell-filled limestone reef. Bring a sense of adventure!

  • This hike is not for beginners!
  • Bring water, hiking shoes (hiking poles suggested), snacks, the field guides of your choice.
  • Aliso & Wood Canyons Wilderness Park, Canyon View Staging Area (from southbound Aliso Creek Road, turn right on Glenwood [turns into Pacific Park] and right on Canyon Vistas, meet at the entrance to Canyon View Park).

Join our Park Rangers Sunday mornings for an easy 1-mile hike on the Nature Trail. The trail takes visitors through grassland, oak woodland, riparian and sandy cactus scrub communities. Meet at Old Corral Day Use area. Rain will cancel hike. 

  • Fee: Free
  • Parking: $5 per vehicle
  • Wear comfortable clothing, hiking shoes.
  • Sunscreen, water and insect repellent are recommended.

Relax in nature.  Enjoy walking meditation, breathing and energization exercises, and sitting meditation. Bring a blanket and a pillow.  No experience necessary.

Weekend Hikes

This Weekends Hikes are going to gorgeous! We have some great weather conditions this weekend, so take advantage and get outdoors!

My Spolight Hike for this weekend is the Ben Franklin’s Birthday Adventure at Aliso & Wood Canyons Park on Sunday.  Children and their parents  will enjoy an activity-filled 2 mile hike to celebrate Benjamin Franklin’s birthday by recreating inventions used by Orange County’s native peoples and Poor “Ranger” Richard will recite from his famous almanac. Sorry, no kites please.

Another hike that sounds very interesting is with Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalist, Karin Klein (author of 50 Hikes in Orange County)  – Edible and Useful Plant Hike OC Parks – Laguna Coast Wilderness Park on Saturday.

Join our Naturalists on a nature walk and learn about Trabuco Canyon animals and nature. Light to moderate walk on mostly paved roads. Meet at the Nature Center just inside the main entrance of the park.

Learn about these edible and useful plants during a moderate, but steep, uneven 2-mile hike (400-ft. elevation gain) with Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalist, Karin Klein (author of 50 Hikes in Orange County)

Birding Basics
OC Parks – Laguna Coast Wilderness Park
Learn the basics of birding and spot native and winter resident birds with Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalists on this 1.5-mile hike over primarily flat, but uneven terrain through one of the most diverse plant communities in the United States.

  • No experience necessary!
  • For ages 12 and up (minors must be accompanied by an adult).
  • Wear hiking or walking shoes and bring your binoculars (Limited binoculars available on loan).
  • Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, Little Sycamore Canyon Staging Area/Nix Nature Center (west side of Laguna Canyon Rd/SR-133, approximately 3.5 miles south of I-5/405).

Morning Walk Around the Lake
