I’m so excited this is back! Don’t miss the 2015 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon competition at the Great Park. The 2015 competition takes place over two weekends, October 8-11 and October 15-18.

The Solar Decathlon challenges collegiate teams from across the country and around the world to design, build and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient and attractive. Visitors to this free public event will have the opportunity to tour the solar-powered houses, gather ideas to use in their own homes and learn how energy-saving features can help them save money. For the first time this year, a local team will be competing. Team Orange County consists of students from UC Irvine, Chapman University, Irvine Valley College and Saddleback College.

The Children’s activity area is adjacent to the Solar Decathlon Village and is open on weekends during the event. Families can enjoy face painting, balloon artists, inflatables and more. The children’s area is open October 10-11 and October 17-18 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Children’s Garden Workshop

CGW birds nestsChildren’s Garden Workshops: Eat Your Plants at the Great Park will help children discover how to make healthy eating choices by learning the nutritional value of summer fruits and vegetables that are currently being grown in the Farm + Food Lab.  Children will identify plant parts and understand how they are connected to the food we eat. We will have fun creating a seasonal (and maybe silly) meal using a leaf, flower, root, seed and a stem.

Explore science, technology, engineering, art, math and music in a fun and stimulating outdoor environment. Young attendees will connect the natural world with their daily lives, deepening their understanding and appreciation for nature. Materials for craft or activity are provided for all children. Workshops are held on the hour and are weather permitting.

Gently used book donations to the Littlle Free Library in the Farm + Food Lab are welcomed.
