S’more appears to be a contraction of the phrase “some more”. The first recorded version of the recipe can be found in the publication Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts of 1927. Although the exact origin is unclear, reports on the group as early in 1925 describe them. Merriam-Webster marks 1974 as the first use of S’more, though recipes for “Some Mores” are in various Girl Scout publications until at least 1973.
Since the Girl Scouts popularized S’mores, it has been a long standing communal tradition around the campfire. No Campfire in site, not to worry – you can make them in the microwave. People have S’more’s dessert tables at dinner parties. Some people skip the food and have S’more parties. A couple of months ago, my local Girl Scout Council staff had a S’more’s competition. That’s a tasty competition.
Go and get your ingredients and get ready to celebrate National S’more’s day with your family.
Here’s the basic S’mores recipe from Hersheys.com
- 4 marshmallows
- 4 graham crackers, broken into halves
- 2 (1.55 oz. each) HERSHEY’S Milk Chocolate Bars, broken into halves
Place 1 graham cracker half on paper towel; top with chocolate bar half and marshmallow. Microwave at MEDIUM (50%) in 10 second intervals until marshmallow puffs. Immediately top with remaining graham cracker half; gently press together. Repeat for each serving; serve immediately. 4 servings.
OUTDOOR S’MORES: Place 1/2 of HERSHEY’S Milk Chocolate Bar (1.55 oz.) on graham cracker half. Carefully toast marshmallow over grill or campfire (supervise the kids if they’re doing this); place over chocolate. Top with second graham cracker half; gently press together.

Although I try to keep our foods healthy sometimes you just gotta give in. I’m also in total Girl Scout mode today, so these Fluffy No Bake S’mores Cups from In Katrina’s Kitchen got my attention.
This dessert not only looks scrumptious (or is it just me and my love for S’mores?) but it’s a great prep ahead dessert. Perfect for dinner parties.
Just whip the ingredients together, assemble, let it sit in the fridge 3 hours or overnight and serve. If you have kids with Peanut allergies dessert will work out great. You use Biscoff spread in place of peanut butter (Biscoff spread is made from Biscoff cookies and gives that graham cracker taste). It can be found near the peanut butter in most grocery stores.
S’mores Cups Recipe
PREP TIME: 15 minutes
TOTAL TIME: 3 hours, or overnight
Fluffy S’mores no-bake mousse cups
8 oz cream cheese, room temperature
4 oz package of chocolate pudding (powder)
2 Cups powdered sugar
1/2 Cup Biscoff spread or Peanut Butter
8 oz tub of Cool Whip
2-3 Tablespoons milk
marshmallows and graham crackers for garnish and layers
- In the bowl of your electric mixer combine cream cheese, powdered sugar, pudding powder, milk, and Biscoff spread.
- Fold in Cool Whip
- Pipe into cups of any size and garnish with graham crackers and marshmallows. Place halved marshmallows in between layers if desired.
- Chill for at least 3 hours or overnight (will become a firmer consistency)
- You can also make this in a 9×13 dish layered between graham crackers.
- Biscoff spread provides a hint of graham cracker taste in the dish. You can substitute peanut butter if you do not have Biscoff.

The 10th annual Great American Backyard Campout is Saturday, June 28. National Wildlife Federation is encouraging people to camp outside on June 28th, or a night of your choice.
National Wildlife Federation’s Board of Directors and other friends have offered to donate $2 in support of NWF’s wildlife conservation work for every person that participates in this year’s Campout— up to $400,000! You can register at the NWF site. You can camp in your backyard, balcony or a campground. They also provide a Campsite Finder which offers you the chance to join other camping teams. National Wildlife Federation hopes to connect more people and families with being in the great outdoors.
National Wildlife Federation also has some Camping Tips, games, songs, stories and recipes on their website.
As a Girl Scout leader I must ask that you please don’t forgoet the s’mores. Did you know that s’mores first appeared in the 1927 Girl Scout Handbook, Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts.
