National Chemistry Week 2014

Are you ready for National Chemistry Week? This years theme is “The Sweet Side of Chemistry – Candy” and will be celebrated October 19-25, 2014 and showcases the chemistry involved in candy and confections.

NCW_logoNCW encourages chemists and chemistry enthusiasts to build awareness of chemistry at the local level. Local Sections, businesses, schools, and individuals are invited to organize or participate in events in their communities with a common goal: to promote the value of chemistry in everyday life.

In Orange County you can celebrate by attending Chemistry Day at Santa Ana Zoo. At home you can celebrate by having some fun candy experiments at hand. You can download Celebrating Chemistry, a pdf booklet filled projects and a great source of reference.

National Chemistry Day at Santa Ana Zoo

Santa_Ana_Zoo_LogoJoin in on a family fun filled day of hands on STEM exhibits in celebration of Chemistry Week at the Santa Ana Zoo on October 12, 2014 from 11am – 3pm

Chemistryday_SAzooSponsored by the American Chemistry Society, this is a hands-on science learning fair at the Santa Ana Zoo. This event serves as a warm up for National Chemistry Week. This year’s theme is “The Sweet side of Chemistry – Candy”. There will be College students from nereby colleges assisting kids with hands-on chemistry experiments. Individual tables with different college groups and different chemistry projects through out the zoo.

Price of the event is included with the price of general admission | FOSAZ Members-FREE

Orange County Museum of Art – Free Second Sundays

Join in the fun at the Orange County County Museum of Art at the “Free Second Sunday” event  for the Fall Season Kick -off on Sunday, September 12, 2014, from 11:00AM – 4:00PM.

Visit the new exhibition The Avant-Garde Collection, arts & crafts activities and join in on the the frenzy with special dance performances by Girl Scouts Orange County. Food trucks will be on site.

TedX Teen Challenge

TedX OrangeCoast’s mission is “To help turn inspiring ideas into actions”. TedXOrangeCoast  is  holding a contest to celebrate the work of teens while focusing on STEAM projects, the contest is open to all teens ages 13-19 years old.

Teens are challenged to come up with an “Idea Worth Doing”. They should submit their idea along with a their plan of action by August 31, 2014. Winners of the TedX Teen Challenge will receive exposure for their project, cash prizes and mentorship for a year. Winners be announced at the 4th annual TEDxOrangeCoast event to be held September 19-20, 2014 at Soka Performing Arts Center in Aliso Viejo, CA.

The Keys of interest for the projects should include one or more of the following: 

  • Innovative: Existing or new project with a novel approach of addressing existing problems

  • Collaborative: Talent and passion win games, teamwork win championships

  • Social Impact: Positive and  measurable impact affecting our community and beyond
