Little Naturalist

My youngest daughter and I attended the Little Naturalist program at ENC – Environmental Nature Center last month. The Little Naturalist programs are an outdoor experiential education classes designed for 3 – 5 year old’s and their adult guardians.

The activities are designed to encourage exploration and discovery and to enrich a child’s emerging physical and cognitive skills.

wpid-2015-02-20_22.08.29.jpg

I thought the program was fantastic. They started with storytime and got the kids up and moving around before heading outside for a hike. Throughout the hike we stopped at various place through out the trails for various activities. The had a preset game set up for the kids to explore and learn, another storytime, crafts, drawing and even math skills.

wpid-2015-02-20_22.10.20.jpg

I was very impressed with the program and plan to go back in March. The age difference between 3 – 5 year old’s was not a problem at all (I was a little concerned at first), it was engaging at every level and kept them going for the complete hour without getting bored.

This is one of my favorite places in Orange County and I plan to take in as many of the Little Naturalist programs as possible until she begins school in September.

wpid-2015-02-20_22.11.24.jpg

Some tips before you come here: pack your drinks, lunch and/or snacks. There are plenty of nice sitting areas throughout the trails that make great lunch spots. Bring closed toe shoes, long shorts or pants – there are dirt trails and plants everywhere (it’s lovely). Be careful of the Poison Ivy – there are signs to warm you, just make sure your little ones don’t touch it.

wpid-2015-02-20_22.20.05.jpg

There are two upcoming Little Naturalist events in March:

Little Naturalists: Little Ladybug and Beetles – Wednesday, March 4, 2015 from 9:30 -10:30 am

Little Naturalists: Looking in Logs  – Friday, March 27, 2015 from 9:30 – 10:30 am

  • Where: Environmental Nature Center is located at 1601 E. 16th Street, Newport Beach, CA 92663
  • Cost: $6 per participant ($5 for members). Pre-payment is required.

The program we attended began with crafts and hands-on learning as the staff bought out zoo animals. The children were all given a chance to touch (almost all) the animals while providing animal facts.

wpid-2014-11-13_15.45.38.jpg

Classes start promptly at 10:15 am and last for one hour. Afterwards we enjoyed the zoo and storytime under the beatiful trees.

FREE Preschool Program in Tustin

Are you the parent of a child ages 3 to 4.75 years looking for a preschool? This preschool program is FREE and absolutely fantastic!

Last year my little one and I where fortunate enough to attend a full years  worth of the Think Together Early Literacy & Math Program. Make no mistake this is a complete preschool program.

The program is two days a week, 3 hours a day. One parent/responsible adult is required to stay with your child through the duration of the program. On one day you are involved in a parent component and the other day you sit, side by side with your child and assist in their learning.

I’ll be honest, when I first signed up last year I thought – Let’s see how it goes for a couple of weeks and then I’ll decide if it’s worth my time  (I wasn’t very optimistic of the quality of the program) but I was so completely and thankfully 100% wrong!

The program is wonderful! the program itself, the program director, the parent component (my favorite part) and the volunteer teachers are all awesome. I am so grateful that my little one and I have been invited back for an additional 15 weeks this year. My time spent at Think Together has truly refined my life.

So here’s your opportunity, There’s still room and the program is FREE! Your time and investment in your child’s education is your payment. You do not have to income qualify for this program.  If you’re looking for preschool program, give this try. Everyone that I was in the program with last year, anxiously awaited the call to come back this year.
