5 Years – Thank you!!!

Today is 5 years of the official first post of Project Refined Life! I want to thank you for allowing me to share my project of how I have been refining, growing and healing my life with you!

Over the years, I have changed and so has this this site. With the help of many teachers and the beautiful souls that have surrounded me, supported me and wiped tears from my face at times; I have shifted from a place of just trying to manage my hurt into a place of peace.

This blog started as a way for me to bringing awareness to drunk driving while offering information, product reviews and events for families. With my growth, this blog has now become a landing spot to contact me for more information about yoga and methods for healing.

I been very busy these last couple of years and it’s now time for me to share what I have learned. Over the next couple of weeks, you will see changes to the site as well as new offerings.

Although my journey into learning and refining the body, mind and soul is far from over, I am anxious to share what I have learned with you.

From the very essence of my being, Thank you, thank you, thank you for the support during my growth and healing. May these first 5 years be just the start of many years and healing to come.

FREE Junior Chef Classes

These kid friendly cooking classes are offered most Saturdays and show kids how fun and easy cooking can be. Kids will learn how to make delicious recipes, from main courses to desserts and snacks, with plenty of tasting along the way.

Saturday, August 1, 2105: Tomatoes are ripe and ready for eating and cooking this summer! Join us and learn to make some delicious dishes that are sure to impress your family. You’ll also learn some fun facts about tomatoes. Suitable for ages 8–13.

Saturday, August 8, 2105: It’s lots of fun to create homemade pasta. We’ll make the dough and roll it out with a hand-cranked machine.
You’ll also watch us make dough in a machine that mixes and extrudes the pasta for you. Then we’ll whip up some basil pesto in a food processor. Finally, we’ll toss the cooked pasta with the pesto and eat. Super-simple and yummy! Suitable for ages 8–13.

Saturday, August 22, 2105: Toasty on the outside with a warm filling inside, pressed Italian sandwiches are always a favorite. Our kid-friendly combos will hit the spot—how about salami and cheese, Nutella and strawberry, or ham, tomato and cheese. Young chefs will have fun making and eating them. Note: Nuts will be served in this class. Suitable for ages 5–13.

Saturday, August 29, 2105: Who doesn’t love pizza! Kids will have a blast rolling out the dough and topping their pizzas as they please. We’ll bake them off and dig in to the best pizza ever! In this class we’ll be featuring Golden Boy Pizza’s San Francilian-style focaccia pizza. Suitable for ages 5–13.

National Chemistry Day at Santa Ana Zoo

Santa_Ana_Zoo_LogoJoin in on a family fun filled day of hands on STEM exhibits in celebration of Chemistry Week at the Santa Ana Zoo on October 12, 2014 from 11am – 3pm

Chemistryday_SAzooSponsored by the American Chemistry Society, this is a hands-on science learning fair at the Santa Ana Zoo. This event serves as a warm up for National Chemistry Week. This year’s theme is “The Sweet side of Chemistry – Candy”. There will be College students from nereby colleges assisting kids with hands-on chemistry experiments. Individual tables with different college groups and different chemistry projects through out the zoo.

Back to Scouting and my Girl Scout Leader Jitters.

I have the most adorable Girl Scout Troop! 11 bouncing Brownies, full of energy, opinions and spunk.

Tonight, is our first meeting after taking a summer break. At our end of year celebration in June, I fully intended on getting together for at least one meeting during the summer…but we didn’t. Summer was busy and I took my Girl Scout Leader hat off, I’m glad I did. I really needed the rest, leading a troop meeting can be exhausting.

As I am preparing for tonight’s meeting I find myself feeling nervous. Why I am feeling so jittery about leading 11 girls through an 1.5 hour meeting? Quality. I really believe in the Girl Scout program. I love what it does for the girls and the opportunities it presents. I want to give them the best experience, the best quality I can possibly provide.

I want them engaged, learning and having fun. I want them to want to be involved in Girl Scouts, even if I’m not their leader. So, I feel the pressure of providing good content. I’m usually exhausted at the end of meeting because I give it everything I’ve got for those 1.5 hour meetings, which is good but exhausting. These girls  have no idea how much they motivate me to do better.

Tonight’s meeting agenda is set. Today, I will be shopping for everything needed to complete our badge work and I will (as I always do) continue thinking of ways to make it better….all day.

As with all things in my life, I am my biggest competition. My jitters come from a desire to have these girls look back at these times as some of the most refining times in their lives. So, with this in mind – please pray for me and I’ll update you on our meeting next week.

*I Love Zoku / August 2nd – This class was such a hit – we’re doing it again! If you love slushies, popsicles and ice cream, then you will love Zoku. Join us and learn how to make these tasty treats. We will be taking pre-sale orders so kids can work with their very own Zoku unit and take it home with them after class. Suitable for ages 5-13.

*Fruits and Vegetables Here & Now /August 9th – Do you know why it’s better to eat fruits and vegetables in season? Join us for this class on understanding the seasons and your food. We’ll even teach you how to make a delicious seasonal sweet treat! Suitable for ages 9-13.

*Apple Snacks / August 16th – Get ready for back-to-school and learn how to make some great apple snacks. Why settle for simple sliced apples – when you can enjoy apple sandwiches and other tasty apple treats. Join us and learn how! Suitable for ages 9-13.

*Build A Better Panini / August 23rd – There’s a sandwich and then there’s a warm, melty and cheesy Panini. Learn how to make delicious panini sandwiches – even a sweet favorite with melted chocolate. Suitable for ages 9-13.

Williams Sonoma FREE Culinary Events August Schedule

For me, walking into Williams-Sonoma is as much of a treat as spending a day at the spa. I could be there for hours. The beautiful cookware, cutlery, all the cooking gadgets and don’t forget the gorgeous La Cornue range (they always have one on display). Seriously, I pray that heaven includes a Williams-Sonoma.

Did you know that this wonderful place offers FREE Technique Classes every Sunday morning? They also offer  Junior Chef Classes every Saturday. Yep, there is a legitimate reason to be at Willams-Sonoma at least twice week.

As for the weekly Technique class, Culinary Specialists show you some of their favorite tips and techniques and prepare and sample great recipes. (you can gawk browse at the cookware afterwards)

 Sunday, August 10:  We’re highlighting our extensive collection of extra-virgin olive oils certified by the California Olive Oil Council by educating cooks and shoppers on the difference between olive oils, how to taste for quality, and how best to use these fresh, flavorful oils.

Sunday, August 17:  Usher in the bounty of a brand new season with crisp apples! Learn how to make the most of this year’s apple harvest. This class will teach you which apples are ideal for cooking, baking or simply enjoying raw as well as teach you how to make delicious apple inspired dishes from homemade applesauce and apple cake to fresh-pressed cider.

Sunday, August 24: Celebrate the second harvest of this spiky seasonal vegetable – the artichoke. In this class, we will teach you how to prep artichokes for both cooking whole as well as using the rich artichoke heart.

Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center and Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve

If your driving along Irvine Ave., in Newport Beach, you might not even notice this 10,000 square foot building. The Interpretive Center is built into one side of the bluffs, and has the most spectacular views of the Bay. I’ve discovered that many people who live in the area are unaware of the Interpretive Center and all it has to offer.

Visiting the Interpretive Center is FREE. Kids can make themselves at home and explore the many puzzles, books, puppets, coloring pages and study the various “pets” in terrariums: snakes, frogs, spiders, etc.

There is an interactive display that shows children the various wildlife to be found in the bay and the importance of keeping it clean. In the theater, you can watch a short film “Saltmarsh Seasons” that the friendly staff will invite you to view at any time.

A few years ago, I was drawn to the Interpretive Center to have my oldest daughter attend one of their weekly classes – Tideland Tykes/Wild Tales ( ages 2-8, $5.00 per child).  They read a story, go for a nature walk on one of the trials, point out animal tracks and talk about the bay. Afterwards, they go back to the Interpretative Center and do a craft or coloring page. This place is in our “favorites” list. The Interpretive Center is also home to Family Science Sundays (which are FREE).

When we go as a family on the weekend, we usually let our girls play inside, have our lunch in the covered outdoor amphitheater, then we go for a walk on one of the many trials. It is truly lovely here.

They also hosts regular coastal clean up and restoration days(great for scouting groups or as a family event). The clean up days are a great way to teach your kids one of the many ways to take action in your community and how important it is.

The center is open from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM Tuesday through Sunday. Admission and parking are free.

SciGirls Encourages Girls (and boys) in STEM

SciGirls is a GREAT show for kids target ages 8-12  (but my 7 year old loves it!) it encourages kids curiosity with all things STEM. Each episode features a different group of tween girls that put science and engineering to work by creating and exploring.  Your kids will see scientific and math principles applied to real-life scenarios. I also love that the show displays teamwork and conflict resolution.

They have a fantastic website filled with games, videos and projects submitted by kids. The viewing schedule times are a little difficult for us but you can watch the entire episodes through the PBS website and YouTube.

How can you help?

Supporting girls in basic ways offers a great foundation for their science success:

  • Encourage Questions

    Encourage girls’ natural curiosity about the world. Scientists are professional question askers. Let her know that it’s perfectly acceptable to not have all the answers, and encourage her to explore and discover!

  • Offer a STEM-friendly Home

    Science happens everywhere. Gardening, auto mechanics, construction, cooking and plumbing all use STEM skills. Encourage safe experimentation and discovery in the kitchen and backyard, where she can practice predicting, measuring, observing and analyzing. Offer basic supplies, Internet access, a library card and a space where she can get a little messy.

  • Provide School Smarts

    With the growing importance of science and technological literacy, it is important to strengthen girls’ engagement, interest and confidence in middle school. Once in high school, girls will make choices that will either open or close doors to continued STEM studies and eventual careers in the field. Help them make educational choices and see the connections between science and math classes and future career options. Start early!

  • Help Girls Access Opportunities

    Great science learning happens outside the classroom as well. In addition to programs such as SciGirls, learning opportunities for kids can be found at science museums, zoos, scouting organizations and STEM clubs during afterschool hours, weekends and summer breaks. These programs often provide girls with introductions to working female mentors, who can help girls navigate the course of becoming a scientist.

  • Talk the Talk

    Talk to girls in your life about math and science. Ask them about what they are learning in school. Encourage them to share their struggles and their successes!
