Science in the Park


OC Parks and The John D. Cooper Archaeological and Paleontological Center are hosting the 2nd annual  Science in the Park, a fun and educational day for the whole family.

There a fun demonstrations like the volcano demo pictured above, plenty of hands on experiements and informations abvailble. You’ll learn about Orange County natural history, our native animals and plants and local Native American culture and the world of science. All of the activities and lectures are lead by leading experts in their fields.

The Junior Scientist Camp will feature plenty of hand-on activities and educational crafts. The OC Zoo will also have various zookeeper chats throughout the day.

Zookeepers Appreciaton Day

It’s time to thank our Orange County zookeepers for all their hard work caring for our zoo animals!

Kids activities include making thank you cards for our zookeepers, crafts, playing games, and a special scavenger hunt where you can enter to win a Zookeeper Shadow Experience!

Kids are encouraged to come dressed in zookeeper attire/costume!

The first 100 children ages 12 & under will receive a free train ride ticket for Irvine Park Railroad!

Zookeepers will be giving “keeper chats” throughout the day and giving out special treats and toys to the zoo animals.

Special talk on “So You Want To Be A Zookeeper” will be given by two of our zookeepers at 10:30 a.m. Visitors can learn what a zookeeper’s day is like, see some of the “tools of the trade” and meet some zoo animals up close! Reservations are not needed.

OC Zoo Star Wars Day

Let the Force be with you when you visit the OC Zoo on Star Wars Day! Come for family fun that includes Star Wars characters, crafts, games, and photo opportunities.

Zoo animals will receive special treats and there will be animal meet-and-greets throughout the day.

The first 100 children ages 12 & under in Star Wars costume will receive a special gift AND a free train ride ticket to Irvine Park Railroad!

All visitors are encouraged to come in Star Wars attire/costume. Reservations are not needed and all activities are free with paid zoo admission.

  • When: Saturday, June 25, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

OC Parks and The John D. Cooper Archaeological and Paleontological Center are hosting Science in the Park, a fun and educational day for the whole family. The event features paleontology, archaeology, Orange County history. geology, biology, native plants and animals and junior scientist camp.

The event takes place on Saturday, April 30, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The days schedule consists of:

  • 11:00 am – “California’s Volcanos” by Valbone “Vali” Memeti, CSUF assistant professor of geological sciences
  • 12:00 pm – Volcano demonstration by David D. Bowman, interim dean of CSUF’s College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and professor of geological sciences
  • 1:00 pm – “Traditional & Contemporary Uses of California Native Plants” by Craig Torres of the Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe
  • 2:00 pm – “Ice Age Fossils” by Eric Scott, Cooper Center associate curator for paleontology
  • 3:00 pm – “Orange County Archaeology” by Jeannine Pedersen-Guzman, Cooper Center associate curator for archeology

Irvine Park Railroad’s 20th Anniversary

Irvine Park Railroad is celebrating their 20th Anniversary and to show their appreciation prices are being rolled back to their original 1996 prices.

Enjoy a 12-minute train ride through beautiful and historic Irvine Regional Park for just $2.00 per person! Other $2.00 activities included in the anniversary celebration will be carnival games, hot dogs, sodas, ice creams, popcorn, bounce house tickets and cotton candy.

They will  be some FREE giveaways which will include Irvine Park Railroad balloons.

  • When: Saturday, February 20 and Sunday, February 21, 2015, the festivities begin at 10:00 am.
