Indoor Edible Gardening

The Ecology Center in Irvine Presents: Indoor Edible Gardening

Edible Indoor Gardening

Valuable nutrition can be obtained from growing food indoors. You can produce high yields of sprouts from a variety of heirloom seeds in a matter of days with minimum time and effort invested. You can extend the harvest season with a variety of vegetables and herbs grown in efficient container mediums. And most sustainably, you can watch your food magically regrow itself by upcycling your food scraps.

Indoor edible gardening allows you to control what goes into growing your food. By growing your own food you contribute to the reduction of the waste and pollution associated with the industrial agriculture mass production and distribution practices.

Learn how to choose the right heirloom (non-gmo) seed and vegetable varieties and gain hands on instructions on the materials and tools to use for maximum yield from your indoor edible garden. You will get to take home a variety of seeds to sprout! (Please bring a wide-mouthed jar to get your sprouting ready!).

Pretend City – So Many Ways to Play

Recently, my family and I were invited to Pretend City for an special “Educators Night” event. I must say it’s been some time since our last visit and my 8 year was delighted to go back.

The purpose of of the event was to introduce educators to the different field trips options Pretend City can provide.

Pretend City Children’s Museum is a mini city (community) made up of 17 exhibits that encourages interactive role playing. Each exhibit within the community; the police station, fire station, doctors office, market, restaurant, farm, beach, etc. encourages critical thinking, teamwork, science skills, math concepts, environmental awareness and importance belonging to a community.

wpid-2014-10-15_21.57.31.jpgBoth my 8 year old and my 4 year old girls had a wonderful time. They both enjoyed the roleplaying aspect and I loved how it naturally encourages you as a parent to “play” with your children. Pretend City provides prompts in each exhibit that help you will empathise a social goal.

As far as Field Trips, I must say I never even thought of Pretend City as a field trip option before this event but in fact they have some great ones. Field Trip Flyer 2014-2015-page-002

There are several tailored specifically for Daisy Girl Scouts but many of them would work for Brownies as well, as an example, the “Explore with Us” field trip could prove very useful while completing  the Brownie Quest

Next year my little one will be a Daisy Girl Scout and I’ll be sure to include Pretend City in my planning for earning many of the petals. In the meantime, I will be sure to pass this information along to my service unit and other Daisy Leaders.

They also have some fun upcoming halloween events (posts are coming soon) in addition to their Read for the Record event on Tuesday, October 21, 2014.

Also, if  you visit during their Way to Play days (the second Friday of each month) with the coupon below, you can get 2 for 1 admission.

Although, the Educators Night event was a sponsored event I  was not paid in any way, shape or form for this post. I am simply trying to pass along valuable information.

The best way to tap into the creative energy that dwells inside us is to trust our minds & hands and NOT overthink the process. Whether it’s watching a cartoon or your child at play, we hold onto these moments through pictures, sounds & feelings, that we store away as brilliant memories. Chuck Jones would do the same thing, only he would recall those memories and express them through his art.
