OC Parks, Sport Chalet and local fishing organization Team 57 host the 2nd Annual Kids’ Fishing Derby at Carbon Canyon Regional Park Lake.

Kids ages 15 and under fish for free at the Fishing Derby. The lake will be stocked with catfish. Following the derby, a free hot dog lunch will be provided by Team 57 and participating vendors (while supplies last).

Fishing experts will be on-site to assist kids. Don’t forget your fishing rod! There will also be an opportunity drawing for kids to win prizes. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Rain will not cancel event.

  • When: Saturday, May 7, 2016 – Registration begins at 8:00 am, Fishing Derby is from 8:00 am -12:00 pm 
  • Where: Carbon Canyon Regional Park, 4442 Carbon Canyon Rd, Brea, CA 92823
  • Cost: Kids 15 and under fish for free. Children must be accompanied by an adult, parking is $5.00

OC Fire Authority Open House

Bring your family and friends to The Orange County Fire Authority’s Open House. See live fire demonstrations, use a fire hose to put out make-believe fires, try on firefighter turnouts, enjoy free food and discover fire safety information in a fun-filled environment!

The Orange County Fire Authority Open House will take place on Saturday, October 24th from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Open House attendees are encouraged to park at the Salvation Army lot at 10200 Pioneer Road. Shuttle service from the lot to OCFA will be offered from 10:00 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Bats of Orange County

Join Park Ranger Brad Barker at Laguna Niguel Regional Park on Saturday, August 8th as we learn about those mysterious creatures of the night – bats!

Ranger Barker will lead a 45-minute presentation about bats that can be found in Orange County. After the presentation, join us for a 30-minute walk to the nearby lake as we look for bats and listen for their echolocation using a bat detector. Meet at the amphitheater. Come early to look at a bat skeleton and skull!

Art Lab Creation Stations

This Weekend, the Great Park host The Art Lab: Creation Stations. The Art Lab: Creation Stations provide an open opportunity to play, create and explore at their self-directed creation stations. This FREE event has hands-on activities emphasize divergent thinking, problem solving skills and innovation.

Families with children of all ages are welcome.

Family Bucket Garden

The Great Park will host a Family Bucket Garden on Saturday, July 11, 2015. This family oriented, hands on gardening workshop will get the whole family growing great food. Participate in a short talk on how to grow good food in containers, followed by attendees planting a ‘bucket garden’ to take home.

Come learn everything you need to know about sustainable home gardening practices. The Garden Workshop series will feature various topics, including seasonal planting, tree health and care and succulents. Workshops are led by the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Master Gardeners of Orange County.

Materials will be available for first 30 families; one bucket per family.

2015 Summer Concert Series

OC Parks welcomes back its annual outdoor Summer Concert Series. There will be six free concerts at Salt Creek Beach, Mason Regional Park, Mile Square Regional Park, Irvine Regional Park and Craig Regional Park.

Friends and families are invited to come out, bring a blanket and a beach chair and enjoy great local live music under the stars at OC Parks this summer season.

The concerts will be held under the summer skies on Thursday evenings from July 23 through August 27, 2015. All shows are from 6:00 pm -8:00 pm and include free admission and free parking.

Here’s the schedule for the 2015 OC Parks Summer Concert Series:

  • July 23, 2015 – Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point: U2 replica The Joshua Tree –  performing with the progressive and classic rock tunes of Zach Churchill.
  • July 30, 2015 – Mason Regional Park in Irvine: folk artist Tom Freund and the local country sensation Downtown Country Club.
  • August 6, 2015 – Mile Square Regional Park in Fountain Valley: Santana tribute band Savor will headline as Big Monsta, will kick off the show.
  • August 13, 2015 – Irvine Regional Park , Venice Beach natives and indie rock group Venice will hit the stage with soul singer Quinn Archer
  • August 20,2015 – Craig Regional Park, enjoy the Fleetwood Mac tribute band Rumours and Yukon Gold.
  • August 27, 2015 – Bluff Park at Salt Creek Beach, Nick Waterhouse will take the stage along with the band Melted who will open the show.

The City of Brea presents: Starlight Cinema in the Park

The Cinema in the Park Series begins tonight – Friday, June 5, 2015 at Arovista Park. Cinema nights take place every Friday through August 14, 2105.

The films are family-friendly and begin about 8:00 pm. Bring your picnic, blankets and get ready for some family fun.

Insect & Anthropod Zoo

OC Parks presents: Under the Sycamores: Insect and Arthropod Zoo

Dr. Sue Van Vorhis Key, Ph.D. (The Bug Lady) will be at Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park with a zoo full of amazing live insects and other arthropods. From walking sticks to scorpions, kids will be able to look and learn!

Kids will touch an insect, experience an insect scavenger hunt in the shade of the sycamores, make their own insect and complete a life cycle puzzle.
