Blast off at Discovery Cube’s annual Rocket Launch! This FREE event is full of hands-on activities for all ages and includes a competition where you’ll design, build and launch your own 2-liter bottle rocket with pressurized air and water.

Rocket Launch is a free community event available to science, rocket and engineer enthusiasts of all ages. Rockets with the longest “hang time” will be awarded prizes.

Pumpkin Launch

On Saturday, November  7, 2014, Join Discovery Cube at Cal State Fullerton for the annual Pumpkin Launch event!

  • Participate in hands-on activities and challenges
  • Witness flying pumpkins launched by giant trebuchets
  • Bring a carved pumpkin for our pumpkin carving contest (must be pre-carved)
  • Enjoy food from your favorite gourmet food trucks

Bring your lawn chairs and witness history at this free event as teams compete to see who can launch a pumpkin at targets using giant trebuchets and other devices. Plus, kids can participate in hands-on activities throughout the day. Don’t miss this great family event!

This event gives engineering enthusiasts can watch various homemade trebuchets launch pumpkins through the air during the competition.

For a more hands-on lesson on projectiles, youngsters are invited to build their own mini catapults with Popsicle sticks and launch marshmallows. Other activities include pop-rocket building and a whiffle ball catapult station. Plus, a medieval showcase will present costumes, weapons, weaving materials and other replicated artifacts from the medieval ages.

Goodyear Blimp Open House

The Los Angeles-based Goodyear blimp “Spirit of America” is retiring. Goodyear invites the community to get a final up-close look at the blimp during a community retirement celebration.

The base will be open to the public for ground tours on Friday, August 7 and Saturday, August 8, 2015 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.. They will also be giving away three blimp rides each day!

“Spirit of America” will be formally decommissioned in mid-August. The blimp will be replaced in the Los Angeles market by its sister ship “Spirit of Innovation” in late September 2015. The transition is taking place as Goodyear celebrates 90 years of lighter-than-air publicity and introduces a new fleet of high-tech, next generation NT Zeppelin model airships.

Festival of Books

LAFestivalofBooksLos Angeles TIme’s signature event, the Festival of Books is this weekend, April 18th & 19th at USC. The Festival of Books is a family-friendly celebration of Books, Art, Travel, Music and Food.

Artists’ Row showcases all types of artists such as: photographers, Illustrators, mixed media and more. The Travel Smart Stage will offer travling tips and tricks. Music will be provided on the L.A. Sound Stage with Castro, a post-punk/new wave band, reggae/ska artist Jackie Mendez, and Ethio Cali, featuring Ethiopian jazz. Some of amazing chefs on the Cooking Stage such as: Pauley Perrette, Food Network and Cooking Channel star; Zoe Nathan, Matthew Kenney and plenty of food trucks.

BOO! San Diego’s only Halloween Parade

The Boo Parade is San Diego’s only Halloween parade! On October 25, 2014 at 10:00 a.m., The Boulevard BOO! Parade is returning to the College Area. This free, family event is bigger and spookier than ever! More floats, more zombies, more music and more surprises. More of what makes the Boulevard BOO! Parade San Diego’s only Halloween Parade.

The fun doesn’t stop after the parade. There are many places to discover in the College Area. Stop over to the After BOO Community Carnival & Float Award’s Ceremony at the College Ave Baptist Church from 11 am to 5 pm, (4747 College Ave.). Enjoy live music, carnival rides, games, cold drinks and food trucks with friends.

The College Area Business District, a non-profit corporation that manages the College Area Business Improvement District, focuses their efforts on helping small business owners in the commercial corridors in the College Area of San Diego, including El Cajon Blvd., College Ave., and Montezuma Rd. The Boulevard BOO! Parade brings thousands to the commercial district to enjoy the local restaurants and specialty shops. Sit patio side and enjoy something tasty and cool to drink while being entertained by the BOO!

This event is designed to give adolescents the opportunity to see what a college campus is like and to introduce them to academics in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) related-industries. Attendees can learn about the science of flying pumpkins and other objects in a creative and interactive way.

Dino Dash

Join the Dinosaur Dash and help support local public schools.  There is an event for everyone – the timed Toshiba 10k and the timed 5k, the 2k fun run, and the non-timed Bike Tour (15k or 50k).

Be sure to visit the expo before and after the event for food, games and more.

All proceeds benefit the non-profit Tustin Public Schools Foundation and local public schools.

DinoDash_BikeTourJoin us for a ride through picturesque Santiago Canyon on our Seven Gables 50k Bike Tour.  The bike tour isn’t timed, so take your time and enjoy the beautiful scenery.  All participants will receive a dry-fit tech shirt, Dino Dash socks, a Finisher Medal, and a FREE Food Court ticket. We’ll have well-stocked rest stops and SAG support throughout the course.

Not ready for a 50k ride?  Try out the 15k shorter course.  You’ll still get the tech shirt, Dino Dash socks, a Finisher Medal and a FREE Food Court ticket.  Watch for the signs indicating the shorter course.

Both the 15k and 50k events start at 6:45 at the Start Line.  Both finish at the Bike Finish on Myford.  A secured Bike Valet is available to store your gear and bike while you visit the expo.

Sizzlin Summer Concerts Tonight

BUILD A BIRDHOUSE! As sprawling urban developments take away natural habitats, it’s important we recreate suitable nesting areas for our native bird species. Join NHM staff to build a birdhouse for your own backyard. That way, the next time you’re relaxing on your patio, you can enjoy the antics and songs of your new neighbors!
Supplies are limited. Available to participants on a first-come, first-served basis.

JUICE! It’s more than a trendy L.A. drink – the health benefits are plentiful. Who better to share the health benefits and tips of their favorite recipes than PRESSED Juicery experts and authors of Juice: Recipes for Juicing, Cleansing, and Living Well. Come by for a sample and learn more about getting your fruits and veggies in a cup. Books will be available to purchase in the Museum Store.

MINATURE GOURD VESSELS! Gourds are more than just an odd shaped fruit. They can be used for a variety of purposes – one of which is creating beautiful vessels. Join Artist in Residence at the LA County Arboretum, Leigh Adams, as she teaches you how to create a miniature gourd vessel of your own.
Mini-workshops will take place at 5:30 pm, 6 pm, 6:30 pm, 7 pm, and *7:30 pm.
*7:30 pm workshop will be bilingual – offered in English and Spanish
