Discover Sherlock Holmes

The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes is coming to the Discovery Cube Orange County on June 11, 2015 and runs through September 7, 2105.

SHE_Trademark_3D_K_Web

This interactive experience combines science with history and culture to bring to life the historic underpinnings of author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories.

Visitors will learn how Sherlock Holmes, a scientific expert, used seemingly trivial observations of clues others missed to solve the most puzzling of mysteries!

This exhibition features original manuscripts and artifacts, investigative tools, and crime-solving opportunities. Visitors will be transported back into victorian London and given a detective’s notebook to use throughout the exhibition to help solve a riveting crime!

Discovery Cube OC is located at 2500 N Main St, Santa Ana, CA 92705. For inforamtion on admission and hours click here.

Here’s a glance inside the exhibition:

Introduction to Sherlock
First, learn about the history of Sherlock Holmes, Conan Doyle, London, and forensic science to help build up basic investigation skills

SH Doyle StudyDr. Conan Doyle’s Study
Next, head into the world of Dr. Doyle, a scientifically educated physician, and relentless investigator. Here you can tour his life background, including his studies as a medical student at Edinburgh University, his apprenticeship at Royal Surgeons’ Hall, his practice in Southsea, Porsmouth, and finally his literary creations.

You will be able to view original manuscripts, letters and illustrations that shed light on the experiences that influenced Conan Doyle to create Sherlock Holmes.

Step Into London
When leaving Dr. Doyle’s study, you will find yourself surrounded by imagery of Victorian London. All of the images are from the Museum of London’s image archive.

Science and History
Here you will enter the Baker Street Underground Station and find yourself in the middle of a bustling center of innovation in the form of an International Science Exhibition.

You can get your photograph taken with 1895’s cutting-edge technology! (Photos are available for purchase)

You can also participate in experiments by exploring the developments in science and technology in the 1890s. Dive into real forensic studies with the help of crime historian E.J. Wagner!

SH Baker Street 4Sherlock Holmes in Baker Street
Next, you will visit Sherlock Holmes’ and Sr. Watson’s sitting-room, where their investigations began and concluded! Here you’ll have to play a recording left by Sherlock, to give you details about a recent crime. Sherlock needs your help to solve a time-sensitive and mysterious case!

Become a Detective
Embark on an adventure through the streets of London while performing scientific experiments, observing details, chasing clues and solving the crime!

Here you’ll get the chance to become a detective-in-training! Use what you learned in the Underground Station Science Exhibition and Dr. Doyle’s Study to solve the mystery. Each mystery location provides additional information and clues! If you don’t reveal the truth in time, an innocent person will be charged with a terrible crime!

Learning About the Culture of Sherlock
Upon your return to the 21st century, you will discover a collection of all things Sherlock, including comics, magazines, and movie and television show props and costumes. Guests can even see props from Warner Bros.’ Sherlock Holmes movie set, and behind-the-scenes tools from shows such as CBS’s Elementary and BBC’s Sherlock.SH 5

Sherlock’s Influence
Here you can see videos that will discuss Sherlock Holmes’ and Conan Doyle’s influence on pop culture, history, and forensic science. Six of the country’s leading forensic specialists will tell you how they solve mysteries today, using many of Sherlock’s techniques.

The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes was developed by Exhibits Development Group and Geoffrey M. Curley + Associates in collaboration with the Conan Doyle Estate Limited, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, and the Museum of London.

Final Weekend of Engineer’s Week

Image from discoverycube.org
Image from discoverycube.org

Don’t miss the final weekend of Engineer’s Week at the Discovery Cube OC and LA.  We took some time out this week to take part in some the excellent activities offered at the Discovery Cube OC for Engineers Week.

wpid-2015-02-26_16.48.23.jpg

Although there was so much to do with Lego Travel Adventure and National Geographic Earth Explorers exhibits, we decided to make the main focus of our visit the Engineer’s Week activities.

wpid-2015-02-26_06.40.33.jpg

The girls had such a fun time making their parachutes and trying them out. After you build your parachute, it’s taken up on a pully to someone on the second floor where they drop it and time it on the way down. Whoever gets the best “hang time” for the day wins a return visit and whoever gets the best “hang time” over the entire week wins a one year membership to Discover Cube!

wpid-2015-02-26_20.22.16.jpg

Although, we didn’t win, the girls had a great time building their parachutes and watching them fly down.

wpid-2015-02-26_16.50.15.jpg We’ve been lucky enough to take part in the Forces of Motion show before you can always learn something new, so we took in this show again and enjoyed it just as much as the first time we heard it.

wpid-2015-02-26_06.44.28.jpg

My oldest daughter has a snap circuit set at home but she doesn’t have the snap circuit set with the “Flying Saucer” so she was very happy to put that circuit set together.

wpid-2015-02-26_16.49.34.jpg

After spending a little bit of time in exploring we were able to get in on the Colors of Light Workshop presented by UC Irvine.

wpid-2015-02-26_06.24.14.jpg

Both of my girls where very intrigued and had a great time learning about light and builting a Spectrometer.

wpid-2015-02-26_06.25.08.jpg

If your kids like to tinker or build, don’t miss this event. This is an awesome opportunity to create and learn with hands-on activities in various fields of engineering.
