Celebrate Underwater Parks Day

Underwater Parks Day is Saturday, January 16, 2016. Underwater Parks Day is a celebration of Marine Protected Areas (MPA’s).

Join the Ocean Institute, Aquarium of the Pacific, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium and other partners, to celebrate recreation and conservation along Southern California’s coast.

Learn about and explore our local Dana Point State Marine Conservation Area and understand the importance of protected areas such as this. Guided tidepool hikes, sea urchin dissections and other activities will highlight this amazing environment and animals that live just feet from our door.

The day is a coordinated event by marine science centers throughout Southern California to educate the public about the statewide network of Marine Protected and Conservation Areas and explain the need for these “underwater parks.”

  • When: Saturday, January 16, 2016 from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

  • Cost: Admission is $10.00 for adults (13 yrs+), $7.50 for Children ages 3 -12 yrs and Seniors ages 65+, Children 2 and under are free.

Cabrillo Marine Aquarium

Join Cabrillo Marina Aquarium for a celebration of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)! These areas, like parks on land, protect underwater marine resources for future generations to enjoy.

To celebrate MPAs and ocean conservation, CMA is participating in Underwater Parks Day. There will be speakers, presentations, interactive activities and handouts for visitors so they can learn more about MPAs, how MPAs work, and where MPAs are located in Southern California.

MPA stories will be told using film, lectures, and interactive exhibits. The event will also feature educational booths and activities in the Great Hall.

Movies at Latern Bay Park

Enjoy an evening under the stars with the nostalgic feel of a drive-in movie, except with low back beach chairs or a blanket!

Each movie night is FREE and has live pre-movie entertainment beginning at 7:30pm, and the movie starting at approximately 8:00pm. Visit the snack bar to purchase water, sodas, hot chocolate, coffee, candy and snacks. FREE popcorn courtesy of the City of Dana Point.

100% of the proceeds from the snack bar benefits local Dana Point Elementary Schools or non-profit organizations. For more information call the City of Dana Point Community Services & Parks Department at 949-248-3530.

Earth Day at Ocean Institute

Celebrate  the 45th anniversary of Earth Day at the Ocean Institute on Saturday, April 25, 2015 from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. The celebrations will included hands-on conservation activities.

• Create fun, eco-friendly crafts
• Learn about the importance of protecting natural environments through
hands-on activities.
Volunteer for the beach/harbor clean-up and get free admission for the day!
Clean-up hours are 9am – 11am; check-in at the front of the Ocean Institute;
supplies will be provided. Registration is not required, however for groups of
10+ please inform Katie Markisz in advance at (949) 496-2274 x 367 or kmarkisz@ocean-institute.org so that we can have ample supplies available for the clean-up.

The Ocean Institute is located at 24200 Dana Point Harbor Dr. Dana Point, CA 92629.

Public hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission price is $6.50 for adults (13 yrs+) and $4.50 for children (3 -12 yrs); Children 2 and under are free. Members are free.

Festival of Whales

The 44th annual Dana Point Festival of Whales is so big it takes two fun-packed weekends in March to celebrate. Although the whales start their migration in late November, you can see hundreds of them right here in beautiful Dana Point during the Festival of Whales.

This multi-weekend festival draws nearly 100,000 visitors each year. The event is filled with something for the everyone! The festival starts off with a family friendly Parade and a Street Fair on Saturday, March 7th followed by festivities through the day and continues on Sunday, March 8th, Friday, March 13th, Saturday, March 14th & Sunday, March 15th.

In addition to the parade & street fair, you can look forward a Polynesian cultural experience, a Clam Chowder cook-off (you all know how much I love food), art and craft exhibits, vintage boats and classic cars ( I love classic cars), Wyland Whale Watching Art Lessons in the Wild, Art Walks, Concerts by Sea, sailing and paddling opportunities, sand sculpting, movies in the park and selection of whale watching excursions or you can whale watch from breathtaking Dana Point Headlands Conservation Park. .

There’s plenty for the kids too. Kids take part in a free fishing clinic, A kids adventure expo, environmental activities, educational opportunities, storytime, citizen science Programs, interpretive crafts & kids activities and more.

Programs and maps will be available throughout the Harbor and on all of the FREE Festival shuttles that transport you to each and every Festival event. Visit their online store  to shop for your favorite Festival of Whales merchandise or you can buy it at the Festival both weekends.

Bring your refillable water bottles – there will be clean, fresh, available. South Coast Water District will be providing water via it’s Emergency Water Trailer. Visit the trailer, fill up and learn how you can reduce water usage during the prolonged drought. Trailer location for each day of the Festival will be included on the event map. Tips on water savings and California friendly landscaping that reduces water usage will also be available from South Coast Water District staff on site.

Ocean Institute

OceanInstitute1The Ocean Institute opens up to the public on select weekends in an effort to educate and inspire people of all ages to participate in their community and learn how to become involved in the Marine Life Protection Act Initiative.

The Ocean Institute will be open this weekend and features a number of hands-on activities, presentations, tidepool walks and educational cruises.This Saturday admission also includes the Underwater Parks Day celebrations.

The Brig Pilgrim is open most Sundays. The Pilgrim is a full size replica of the hide brig immortalized by Richard Henry Dana, Jr. in his American seafaring classic novel Two Years Before the Mast. Dana said of the Pilgrim , “The vessel I am going on is small, but strong and a remarkably fast sailer having been built for the smuggling trade.”

Dana Point Boat Parade of Lights

The 40th Annual Boat Parade of Lights at Dana Point ”FantaSEA Holiday”  takes place on Friday, December 5, Saturday, December 6, Friday, December 12 & Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 7:30pm at the Water’s Edge.

Boaters from all around Orange County decorate their boats for the awards of Judges Choice, Best Theme, Best Use of Lights, Best Animation, Most Colorful, Most Original, Best Sailboat, Best Powerboat and the Perpetual Trophy.

You can view the parade free from anywhere in the Harbor while enjoying the lights and sounds of IlluminOcean – 40 Nights of Lights or make reservations at one of the restaurants to view it from a cozy and warm spot.

Tidepool Terrors

tidepoolterrorsExperience Tidepool Terrors at the Ocean Institute – Make  your own goo and experience the mysteries the ocean has to offer, including animal dissections and ghostly stories told by the undead. Learn about the “vampires of the deep” and other unique characteristics of marine life.

If you are daring, take a tour of the Brig Pilgrim….some sailors say it is haunted!

Children who dress up in costumes get in free and can enter a costume contest at 11am. Categories include: best ocean related costume, best eco-friendly costume, best maritime costume, and best overall costume. There might even be some ghostly dancing!

Admission is $6.50/adult; $4.50/child. Members and kids (4-12) in costume are free!
