Zookeepers Appreciaton Day

It’s time to thank our Orange County zookeepers for all their hard work caring for our zoo animals!

Kids activities include making thank you cards for our zookeepers, crafts, playing games, and a special scavenger hunt where you can enter to win a Zookeeper Shadow Experience!

Kids are encouraged to come dressed in zookeeper attire/costume!

The first 100 children ages 12 & under will receive a free train ride ticket for Irvine Park Railroad!

Zookeepers will be giving “keeper chats” throughout the day and giving out special treats and toys to the zoo animals.

Special talk on “So You Want To Be A Zookeeper” will be given by two of our zookeepers at 10:30 a.m. Visitors can learn what a zookeeper’s day is like, see some of the “tools of the trade” and meet some zoo animals up close! Reservations are not needed.

Celebrate Underwater Parks Day

Underwater Parks Day is Saturday, January 16, 2016. Underwater Parks Day is a celebration of Marine Protected Areas (MPA’s).

Join the Ocean Institute, Aquarium of the Pacific, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium and other partners, to celebrate recreation and conservation along Southern California’s coast.

Learn about and explore our local Dana Point State Marine Conservation Area and understand the importance of protected areas such as this. Guided tidepool hikes, sea urchin dissections and other activities will highlight this amazing environment and animals that live just feet from our door.

The day is a coordinated event by marine science centers throughout Southern California to educate the public about the statewide network of Marine Protected and Conservation Areas and explain the need for these “underwater parks.”

  • When: Saturday, January 16, 2016 from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM
  • Where: Ocean Institute – Ocean Education Center – 24200 Dana Point Harbor Dr. Dana Point, CA 92629
  • Cost: Admission is $10.00 for adults (13 yrs+), $7.50 for Children ages 3 -12 yrs and Seniors ages 65+, Children 2 and under are free.

Cabrillo Marine Aquarium

Join Cabrillo Marina Aquarium for a celebration of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)! These areas, like parks on land, protect underwater marine resources for future generations to enjoy.

To celebrate MPAs and ocean conservation, CMA is participating in Underwater Parks Day. There will be speakers, presentations, interactive activities and handouts for visitors so they can learn more about MPAs, how MPAs work, and where MPAs are located in Southern California.

MPA stories will be told using film, lectures, and interactive exhibits. The event will also feature educational booths and activities in the Great Hall.

7th Annual Bat Night

batsJoin Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary for their most popular annual event, the 7th annual Bat Night!

The Sanctuary will be aglow up with thousands of twinkling lights  – making it the perfect setting to discover the wonder of these nocturnal animals. Learn why bats are so important and why we need to protect them.

Admission to the sanctuary on Bat Night will include the following activities: arts and crafts, games, live animal demonstrations and a family friendly interactive Bat program that will begin at 4:30 pm. and again at 6:30 pm.

Other activities available for a fee are: Face painting, pumpkin craving, wagon rides and a BBQ dinner. (see their website for more details).

A Post Event Program will begin at 8:15 pm for adults 18 and over.

Acorn Day

AcornDayFlier2015-page-001Come celebrate Acorn Day under the oaks at O’Neill Regional Park. It’s a free, family-friendly day of excitement and learning with activities for every age:

  • free crafts for kids
  • live butterfly enclosure
  • games, face painting
  • live music
  • nature exhibits
  • oak tree planting
  • ukulele lessons for kids.

Guided nature hikes to the Water Tower will be offered at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Presentations throughout the day include Journeys to the Past, Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary, Inside the Outdoors, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Reserve K-9 Program, The Hummingbird Story and a live butterfly release at 2:30 p.m. by Western Monarch Guardians.

Participants also include OC Trails, The Helena Modjeska Foundation, Tree of Life Nursery, Orange County Fire Watch, OC Parks, Earthroots Field School, The Saddleback Area Historical Society, Southern California Bluebird Club, Saddleback Canyon Riders, SHARE Mountain Bike Club, Southwestern Field Herping Associates and The Institute for Wildlife Studies and more.

Family Science Sunday

Muth Interpretive Center

Family Science Sunday at Muth Interpretive Center offers Free activities in their classroom once a month.

Each month offers different educational theme to explore. This months theme is Astronomy.

The activities are self-guided and may include hands on exhibits, outside hikes, crafts and more. Join Preserve Staff for a short hike at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. Recommended for ages 3-12.

The Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center is located at 2301 University Drive, Newport Beach, CA 92660. It is at the corner of University and Irvine Avenue.

OC Zoo Summer Program

The programs feature crafts and hands-on learning as the staff introduces OC Zoo animals to the children. The children are all given a chance to touch (almost all) the animals while providing the children with animal facts. After the program be sure to catch storytime under the beautiful trees.

This weeks scheduled programs:

Under the Sea Preschool Program – children ages 3-4 will learn all about animals in the ocean including fish, dolphins, sharks, and more! Class includes hands-on learning, fun crafts, and meeting zoo animals up close!

  • Ages 3-4 years old only. Parent must accompany child for duration of program
  • Fee: $5 per child (includes one adult).

Upcycling Animal Craft Fun – Kids ages 5 -8 will make fun crafts out of recyclable materials you have at home! Please bring a large bottle cap and quart-sized plastic jug to class.

  • Ages 5-8 years old only. Parent may accompany child for duration of program.
  • Fee: $5 per child (includes one adult).
  • Date: 6/25/2015
  • Time: 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM

Be sure arrive at the zoo gate by 9:45 am to purchase your ticket as the program begins promptly at their scheduled times. Parents must accompany their children for the entire program.

  • Cost: $5.00, per child (includes the program fee and entrance to the zoo for one child and one adult/guardian) and a park entrance fee of $3.00 per vehicle.
