A Weekend of STEAM

This weekend is filled with some great STEAM/STEM events. A few days ago, I shared Imaginology, a STEAM event that takes at the OC Fair Grounds. It’s a fantastic event that we’ve been a attending for a few years now. Today, I’m sharing two more great STEAM/STEM events.

All of these events take place this weekend. Get your little STEMists to one of these fun filled events.

Are you ready for a day of Science, Math, Engineering, and Technology? Join Columbia Memorial Space Center for their 3rd annual City of STEM event.

This FREE event brings together hands-on activities and nearly two dozen science partners to the Space Center like: SpaceX, Natural History Museum, Aquarium of the Pacific, LA Zoo, and much more!

All are welcomed and are sure to enjoy this event. There will be food trucks on site like: My Delight Cupcakery, Romolo’s Italian Cuisine and TNB Food Truck.

Rocket Fever 2016

Have you ever wanted to build and launch a rocket? Come to LA’s only rocket festival at Columbia Memorial Space Center for Rocket Fever 2016! Experience a full day of great science activities, awesome food trucks, incredible demonstrations, prizes, and of course, rocket launches.

Build and decorate a rocket of your very own, then get ready to see it launch into the air. See others launch their own custom rockets* into the air, or take a look at some of the larger rockets created by hobbyists!

Whether you are new to the hobby or a veteran rocketeer, the Columbia Memorial Space Center welcomes you for a fun filled day of rocketing. *Due to safety reasons, Only rockets with A and B motors are allowed.

How to built your own Rocket?

Step 1: Get a rocket: Bring your own rocket from home. Model rocket kits can be purchased at most hobby stores or online and are available for all skill levels.

Step 2: Buy a rocket motor: Individual rocket motors will be sold by the Southern California Rocketry Association (SCRA) on the day of the event only. Size A and Size B motors are the only motors accepted.

Step 3: Pass inspection: Pick up your “Rocket Inspection Pass” and head over to the Rocket Inspection Station along the outside of the baseball diamond. All rockets must pass inspection before flying. All launches are weather permitting.

Young Explorers Academy

This Saturday, the theme for this July’s “Young Explorers Academy” at Columbia Memorial Space Center is “Seed Growth”. The Young Explorer’s Academy is designed especially for children ages 3-5.

Children will EXPLORE, EXPERIMENT, and CREATE during hands-on and participant-lead activities based on various early childhood topics.

July is a time for summer picnics and celebrating the summer. Watermelons, strawberries, and cantaloupes are popular summer fruits, but how do we get them to our picnic tables from a small seedling? Come join Young Explorers Seed Growth workshop at the CMSC as they answer the questions of seed growth together.

City of STEM Festival

Celebrate Science,Technology Engineering & Math at the week long City of STEM Science Festival. The Festival begins Monday, March 28, 2016 and runs through Saturday, April 2, 2016. The week is filled with fun events for both kids and adults. events will be hosted everyday at different locations at Columbia Memorial Space Center and other locations within the community.

In addition to a special event taking place every day of the week. Admission to the Columbia Memorial Space Center and every event will be FREE  from Tuesday, March29th through Saturday, April 2nd.  

Monday, March 28th – Dinner for former employees of the aerospace plants that were here in Downey. Reservations required.

Tuesday, March 29th 7:00pm – Pub Science at the Downey Brewing Company. Join us as we discuss the science of brewing beer with Lagunitas Brewing Co, and talk about Planetary Science and the possible 9th planet with one of the two Cal Tech scientists who discovered it, Konstantin Batygin.

Wednesday, March 30th – Cosmic Carnival here at the CMSC. Join us this day as we host special Spanish speaking tours and activities.

Thursday, March 31st 5:30pm –Girls in STEM Summit at the CMSC. We will be hosting speakers from several organizations (JPL, Boeing, Virgin Galactic, Herpatology Society) as we discuss girls in STEM fields and hear their personal stories. We’ll also have really fun and engaging activities as well! This is being put on by our very own Girls in STEM Club.

Friday, April 1st – Cosmic-Palooza   Spend your Friday night in our back amphitheater as we’ll have great science themed live music! The convert begins at 6:00pm.

Saturday, April 2nd 10:00am-5:00pm – BIG Science Fest at the CMSC. Stop by and join us for LA’s biggest Science Festival! Admission will be FREE all day. Food trucks, special activities, rocket launches — this will be a great way to spend a Saturday with the family!

Young Explorers Academy

The Young Explorers Academy at Columbia Memorial Space Center  is for children ages 3-6. They will EXPLORE, EXPERIMENT, and CREATE during hands-on and participant-lead activities based on various early childhood topics.

In this month’s Young Explorer’s Workshop, students will use their own creativity and initiative to construct their own engineering feats. Drawing on ideas from the past and new inventions of today, children will have the opportunity to put their skills to the ultimate test when we discover our engineering sides!

Girls in STEM

Something very exciting is taking place over at the Columbia Memorial Space Center! The Columbia Memorial Space Center has recently launched “Girls in STEM” an out-of-school science club that will brings interactive and hands-on experiences in STEM to young girls within the community.

Girls are encouraged to explore and test their own ideas as well as careers in STEM. Joining and attending the Girls in STEM Club is absolutley FREE!

The club is best suited for girls ages 8 and up. In additon to the club meetups, normally held on the 3rd Saturday of the month, the girls also have outings such as a recent trip to JPL. Any money needed for outings or materials can be earned through various fund raising events. This is a great opportunity for our girls!

This months meeting the girls will be putting together a temporary exhibit for the CMSC’s commemoration event.

Junior Explorers Academy

I was excited to see that in addition to Columbia Memorial Space Center hosting their monthly “Young Explorers Academy” they are now also hosting Junior Explorers Academy! 

Junior Explorers Academy is a monthly workshop for children aged 6-8.  Different science topics will be covered each month, providing children with opportunities to explore and experiment  through hands-on activities that will stimulate their natural curiosity of the world around them.

This months topic is “How the Solar System Began”. Come journey back to a time completely unimaginable, as they introduce the formation of our solar system from clouds of gas and dust creating nebulas, a first-hand introduction of the coming together of matter known as accretion, and finishing off with a homemade comet.

Star Wars Days

Calling all Jr Star Wars fans….Jedi, Sith Lords, and Padawans included! Join Columbia Memorial Space Center this Friday, December 18th and Saturday, December 19th for Star Wars days!!

These are some of the out of world Star Wars take home activities you can look forward to: How to build a lightsaber, How to program a robot or droid, Build a Force glove, Make your phone a hologram projector & Star Wars snowflakes.

They will also be handing out free pop corn tickets for the new Cinemark XD that just opened up across the street! Please come dressed in your favorite Star Wars costume!

Family Night

Join Columbia Memorial Space Center for Family Night! Bring the family for night filled with games for the entire family.

You can form a team or enter alone to participate in dozens of games throughout the space center. As participants play they will continue to gain points.  As they gain more points their team will climb the leader board.

At the end of the night the top 3 players will win a prize and the top player(s) will be posted on our website/social media as the “ULTIMATE Gamer”.

Participants will play games and solve scavenger hunts and puzzles that will challenge any age. Expect super-sized games, group activates, robotic challenges and other family friendly competitions.

Spooky Science Night is back and set to be SCARIER and more SLIMY than ever!

The Columbia Memorial Space Center invites all ghouls, goblins, princesses and mad scientists to dress their best and enjoy two chilling nights of science fun that the entire family will never forget!

Bring the whole family for scary dark mazes, spooky robotics lab, super slime station, star gazing, live entertainment & food trucks.

Wolf Corp. Robotics

Kids of all ages come to a Robotics Demonstration at Columbia Memorial Space Center by Wolf Corp. Robotics team from Walnut, California, one of the Google Lunar XPRIZE Challenge for kids Phase I Winners (2015 Moonbots) & FLL award winners including the 2015 California Cup Champion at Legoland.

Girls in STEM

Do you know a girl between the ages of 9 -18 who loves STEM? If so, bring them to the “Girls in STEM Club meeting”.

The Girls in STEM Club based at the Columbia Memorial Space Center is a new, out-of-school experience open to girls ages 9 to 18 and from all backgrounds!Through hands-on activities and challenges centered on STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) topics, girls are encouraged to create, explore, and test new ideas.

Through mentoring relationships and increased opportunities, the club equips girls to be life-long learners and advocates for the diversity of women in STEM careers.

Rocket Fever

Rocket Fever 2015 at Columbia Memorial Space Center takes place on Saturday, August 15, 2015.

LA’s first and only rocket festival returns! Whether you are new to the hobby or a veteran rocketeer, the Columbia Memorial Space Center welcomes you for a fun filled day of rocketing. Enjoy interactive exhibits, rocket flying fun and much more! Additional fees apply for rocket building classes.

Rocket launches will be held all day long on the “launch fields” at the Discovery Sports Complex. Come watch these high flyers accelerate towards the clouds!  3…2…1… Blast off!


How Can I Launch a Rocket?

Step 1: Get a rocket (in one of the following ways): Pick up a pre-assembeled rocket. Ready-made rockets will be available for guests free of charge.  Visit the Information Desk upon entry to the Space Center for more information. While supplies last!

Rocket Building 101! Sign up for this class during Rocket Fever and launch your newly built rocket that same day!* Previous knowledge of rocket science not required!  Rocket-building classes have set times and are on a first-come, first served basis. Class passes can be purchased for $5 at our Cashier desk. Each pass is good for 1 rocket kit and admits two (2) people. One rocket motor is included in the price.

*Note: Rockets must dry for approximately two hours before launching.

Bring your young explorer on the first Saturday of every month for the Young Explorers Academy! July’s theme is “Living in Space”,

Spaghetti, milkshakes, walking: all things astronauts of the International Space Station must go without while orbiting around the Earth at 17,000 miles per hour. Students in this class will learn what astronauts and cosmonauts do as part of the ISS crew. Eating, personal hygiene, and exercising are adaptive to the loss of gravity. Students will also be introduced to other careers in aerospace engineering and science related fields.

Voyage to Mars

This immersive experience takes participants on a journey unlike any other. By taking on tasks and responsibilities similar to that of NASA’s Mission Controllers and Astronauts, you become an important team member on this “Voyage to Mars”!!

Are you willing to take the challenge of exploring the vastness of space and worlds beyond our Earth? With groups like Virgin Galactic and Mars One working to extend human’s reach in space, now is your chance to get a glimpse into what lies in the future for humankind. Like Columbus landing on the New World, you too can voyage and explore the unfamiliar lands of the Red Planet.
