Fishing Derby

OC Parks, Sport Chalet and local fishing organization Team 57 host the 2nd Annual Kids’ Fishing Derby at Carbon Canyon Regional Park Lake.

Kids ages 15 and under fish for free at the Fishing Derby. The lake will be stocked with catfish. Following the derby, a free hot dog lunch will be provided by Team 57 and participating vendors (while supplies last).

Fishing experts will be on-site to assist kids. Don’t forget your fishing rod! There will also be an opportunity drawing for kids to win prizes. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Rain will not cancel event.

  • When: Saturday, May 7, 2016 – Registration begins at 8:00 am, Fishing Derby is from 8:00 am -12:00 pm

Hoot N’ Howling Night Hike

The Hoot N’ Howl Night Hike at Carbon Canyon Regional Park is back! Park rangers will lead a starlit hike showcasing the natural wonders that can only be seen at night. This FREE guided night hike will feature activities including:

• A visit to the Nature Center
• A live animal presentation
• A hike through the wilderness area

Carbon Canyon Regional Park is located at 4442 Carbon Canyon Rd, Brea, CA 92823

This is an outdoor event so dress appropriately and bring a flashlight. This is the first of three night hikes scheduled at Carbon Canyon Regional Park. The next two are scheduled on Saturday, November 7, 2015 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., space is limited, please call to register  (714) 973-3160 or email carboncanyon@ocparks.com

Happy 40th Anniversary Carbon Canyon!

Come celebrate the 40th anniversary of Carbon Canyon Regional Park and the planting of the Redwood Grove.

This free, family-friendly event offers something for everyone: crafts for kids, a balloon artist and a face painter. Inside the Outdoors will also be giving a live animal presentation. Ranger-led hikes to the Redwood Grove will be offered at 8 a.m., 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Participate in the hike and get a prize! Participants include: California State Parks, California Department of Fish & Wildlife, Olinda Museum, Hills for Everyone and Friends of Harbors, Beaches and Parks. A historian will also be on site to give a brief history of Carbon Canyon.

Learn about the California Native Plants and wildflowers with a Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalist on this enjoyable 2.5 mile hike (45-ft elevation gain) over moderately uneven terrain.

  • Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, James Dilley Preserve (405 South to 133 south to stoplight at 73 turn-off; make a U-turn, go 1 block. Dilley is on the right).

Morning Fitness Hike at Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve
Take a mildly strenuous 2.5-mile hike along the Back Bay with preserve staff.  Hike will begin in front of the Muth Center.  The hike is on both paved and dirt paths with mostly flat surfaces.This hike explores the upland areas of the bay – with opportunities to see the birds, mammals and reptiles that make this habitat their home.

For this weekends edition of “Weekend Hikes” the pick of the week is the “Fitness Challenge for All at Aliso & Wood Canyons Park”. Any mention of a hike with an ocean view is a winner in my eyes. This hike is considered a challenging hike as it is a 5-mile hike with a 900-ft. elevation gain.

The hikes are always FREE, just cover the parking fee – or buy a OC Parks parking pass and enjoy our gorgeous parks for the entire year.

Fishing Derby

Join OC Parks – Carbon Canyon Regional Park for their Inaugural Fishing Derby of the newly restored 4 acre lake. OC Parks’ staff, Sport Chalet and local fishing organization Team 57 will be present.

Parents bring your children ages 15 and under for an exclusive opportunity to fish between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. (Everyone else after 12 p.m.) Don’t forget your fishing pole! There will be Fishing experts on site, Fish related vendors, a chance to win prizes and FREE hot dog lunch following the derby while supplies last

It’s Easter weekend but you can still enjoy a hike with the family. My pick for this weekend is the Redwood Hike at Carbon Canyon Regional Park, yes….we have Redwoods right here in Orange County. This is an easy hike and the kids will loving seeing this grove of Redwoods.

Bring the kids Easter baskets and hop over to one of the local Easter Egg Hunts afterwards.

Let’s do this!!! Okay,this may just be my excitement coming through for one of my New Year’s resolutions but really, what better way to get in shape then going hiking!

If your new here, welcome! This is a weekly post of OC Park’s weekend’s hikes. All of these hikes are led by an OC Park Ranger or by a staff member of OC Parks. One of the hikes in this weekend’s edition is the monthly “Carbon Canyon Redwood Hike”, this is a great hike for families. It’s an easy trek that comes complete with the reward of seeing a grove of Redwood trees right here in Orange County. I hope you find a hike that’s inspiring for you. Happy hiking!

Weekend Hikes – December 27-28, 2014

OC Parks has a some great hikes planned for this weekend including a night hike at Carbon Canyon Regional Park. This hike is very popular with families. My girls were very excited about hiking at night and the live animal presentation prior to the hike was a hit with all the kids.
